Advantages:

Aggregates are formed by injection of a suspension of hydrogel nanoparticles which result in a porous, hydrogel implant.

Viscosity of aggregate solution remains constant with changes in the material properties.

  • Material can be injected with minimal force in a small gauge needle, e.g. 30 or 32.

Aggregate composition can be tailored to fit a desired, specific release profile e.g. macromolecule:

  • Release is dependent on macromolecule, size and shape.

  • Aggregate pore sizes are set to deliver macromolecule at desired rate.

  • Burst release can be minimized.

Incorporated macromolecules are protected from enzymatic attack until release.

The rate of pore formation and cellular infiltration can be controlled to optimize fibrous capsule formation.

Aggregates have minimal inflammatory response as long-term implants.

Hydrogel nanoparticles being composed of pHEMA, has excellent biocompatibility properties.

Nanoparticle aggregates are composed of a polymer that has been FDA approved and used in implantable devices and contact lenses.
