Wound Care, Topical, Dermal, Breast Implants and Ocular

ULURU’s patented Nanoflex® Technology has been engineered to provide benefits in a wide variety of clinical applications. Nanoflex has been studied for drug delivery and to provide specific physical properties in areas of topical drug delivery, topical applications, aesthetic plastic surgery, and woundcare.

1. Wound Care application         

Nanoflex™ Hydrogel Wound dressing is a new class of material designed to provide optimized wound healing at the wound bed-dressing interface. Unlike other dressings, Altrazeal® is composed of hydrogel nanoparticles that are isolated as stabilized flakes and presented as a sterile powder. The powder is unique in application and performance on a moist wound surface. When applied to a moist wound, the nanoparticles interact with wound exudates and hydrate; hydration of electrolytes causes the particles to lose stability and they rapidly aggregate forming a strong uniform gel material with intimate contact to irregular surfaces of the wound bed. The nanoparticle size and composition where selected to provide a wound dressing that remains strong and flexible, has a high moisture vapor transfer rate, and requires no secondary dressing during wound healing. 2. Topical application     

The ULURU Nanoflex® elastic gel technology has been designed to provide topical drug delivery from an elastic material that behaves as a reservoir to drugs against the skin surface.

3. Dermal Application

Dermal Filler Technology

  • Long-lasting sub-dermal filler
    • Can be used in conjunction with short residence dermal fillers composed of only hyaluronic acid.
    • Expands the market for commercial dermal fillers
    • Contains a higher ratio of nanoparticles to hyaluronic acid
  • Long-lasting dermal filler
    • Attributes of conventional dermal filler but with much longer residence time.
    • Contains a lower percentage of nanoparticles for higher collagen infiltration
  • Facial sculpting implant
    • Allows injectable implants for chin, cheekbone and maxillofacial sculpting.
    • Several formulations for different facial zones and specific applications.
    • Contains a lower percentage of hyaluronic acid and higher percentage of nanoparticles to provide less porous composition.

Dermal Filler Technology

Partially Resorbable Dermal Filler     
Aggregate injected in PBS and sonicated to speed dissolution of hyaluronic acid

  • Viscous gel composed of hyaluronic acid (HA), water and pHEMA nanoparticles
  • Composition can vary from 90% resorbable HA and 10% pHEMA to 10% HA and 90% pHEMA nanoparticles
  • Non-resorbable pHEMA maintains 85% of the original injection volume with aggregation
    • 10 % pHEMA composition results in a very porous scaffold
    • 90% pHEMA composition results in a denser, more compact scaffold

Aggregate Dermal Filler Attributes

Aggregate Product Attributes:

  • Does not apply to bone or hard tissue filling

4. Breast Implants

  • 14 Day Rabbit Toxicology Studies (Completed)
  • GLP Toxicology Studies (Completed for pHPMA and pHEMA)
  • 180 Day Porcine Rupture Study (Commence 2nd Quarter 2007)

Viscous Gel 14 Day Toleration Study     

  • 50 g of rhodamine-labeled gel encased in a ruptured breast implant shell was surgically implanted in a rabbit.
  • After 14 days the implant was excised and the entire gel was found aggregated at the rupture site as an intact hydrogel mass.
  • Gross observation of draining lymph nodes, lungs, liver and spleen showed no migration of gel.

Drug Delivery Eye Drop Applications     

  • On administration of the eye drop into the conjunctival sac immediately on contact with body fluids the eye drop fluid will irreversible coalesce to form a self assembling implant.
  • Material conforms to the shape of the conjunctival sac area.
  • The material characteristics of the implant can be designed to the intended application
  • The material is significantly softer than implantable drug delivery devices
  • Drug release rates can be tailored over 30 days or longer depending on the amount of drug required
  • Permanent implant material can be easily removed after application.
